DV-2014 updates:

The Next Green Card lottery (DV 2014) is now available with USAGC services and will be available at the end of this year with the US government website.

This year, being an election year, brought up many immigration related questions in the United States and every day you can hear of new proposals of how to deal with the legal and illegal immigration to the United States.

One of the last proposal suggest a fee for registration to the Green Card lottery (of about 30$).

Changes in Green Card policy

Lately, there is an effort by the US government to ease the process of getting a green card, especially for people who live in the US and are in the middle of the immigration and naturalization process; mainly people with American family:

"The government said on Friday it plans to reduce the time that U.S. citizens are separated from spouses and children who have been in the country illegally and who are forced to leave for as long as 10 years while their visa requests are processed." (source: Reuters)

DV 2013 registration period

The Green Card lottery registration for this year (DV 2013) will end on November 5th 2011.

Here is the official message from dvlottery.state.gov:

"Entries for the DV-2013 DV program must be submitted electronically between… October 4, 2011, and… Saturday, November 5, 2011… Paper entries will not be accepted. We strongly encourage applicants not to wait until the last week of the registration period to enter…"

Good news for the People of Poland and South Sudan, Bad for Bangladeshis.

The U.S. Department of State has announced a change to the rules of the DV-2013 lottery. The Green Card Lottery is now opened for Poland and South Sudanese immigrants and closed for Bangladeshi immigrants. The eligibility of countries is determined by the number of immigrants from that state in the previous years. Generally, if the number of immigrants from one country (people who were born in that country and not citizens of it) passes 50,000, the country will not be eligible to participate in the next lottery.

Starting with the good news, applicants from South Sudan and Poland are now eligible for the Green Card lottery (Poland was not eligible and South Sudan, after years of wars is a new country). To the disappointment of many Bangladeshi citizens, Bangladesh is now ineligible for the DV lottery.

The relevant information from travel.state.gov:

"....For DV-2013, natives of the following countries1 are not eligible to apply because the countries sent a total of more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the previous five years:
BANGLADESH, BRAZIL, CANADA, CHINA (mainland-born), COLOMBIA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, ECUADOR, EL SALVADOR, GUATEMALA, HAITI, INDIA, JAMAICA, MEXICO, PAKISTAN, PERU, PHILIPPINES, SOUTH KOREA, UNITED KINGDOM (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and VIETNAM."

and the good news for South Sudan and Poland:

"....For DV-2013, natives of South Sudan and Poland are now eligible for selection..."

American authorities announce re-selection process

Recently the US immigration authorities announced that due to a computer error, the results of the 2012 Green Card Lottery are not valid and a new selection process will be conducted based on the original entries for the 2012 program.

With over 20,000,000 applicants in 2010, the American Green Card Lottery program is a very popular worldwide immigration opportunity, and with 55,000 new Permanent visa permits allocated each year the Green Card Lottery or the Diversity Visa program is a valid and feasible chance to people all over the world seeking a new life and a better future in America.
Due to a computer coding error the selection process did not represent a fair, random selection of entrants, as required by U.S. law.
A new selection process will be conducted based on the original entries for the 2012 program. All submitted applications will be included in the new selection lottery.
The Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Visa Services at the U.S. Department of State,
Mr. David Donahue expressed his sincere apology on behalf of the U.S state department for this unfortunate computer error that caused the selection process to be not valid because it did not represent a fair, random selection of entrants as required by U.S. law.

Because this problem unfairly disadvantaged many Diversity Visa Lottery entrants, The US Government will conduct a new, random selection. The new selection will be based on the original entries. If you submitted a qualified entry in 2010 between October 5 and November 3, you do not need to re-apply. Your confirmation number to check results on this website is still valid.
